The Third Legal Innovation Forum of CASS Law Institute and CASS Institute of International Law in 2016 Successfully Held

The Third Legal Innovation Forum of CASS Law Institute and CASS Institute of International Law in 2016 was successfully held at the lecture hall of the two institutes on the morning of April 26, 2016. At the forum, Professor Zhao Jianwen, Chief Researcher of the innovation project on the safeguarding of human rights, gave a lecture entitled the South China Sea Arbitration Case and China’s Right of Peaceful Development. The lecture was presided over by Ms. Li Xixia, an executive researcher of the project, and attended by over 20 researchers and graduate students from the two institutes. In the lecture, Professor Zhao discussed various issues relating to the South China Sea Arbitration Case and China’s right to peaceful development from the following perspectives: China’s rights and interests in the South China Sea and the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea; the illegality of the Philippines’ arbitration claims (that China’s activities in South China Sea had violated the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, interfered in the Philippines’ exercise sovereign rights and freedoms and endangered marine environment) and of the ruling made by the arbitration tribunal on the jurisdiction of the case; and China’s countermeasures. Professor Zhou held that China should resolutely uphold its historical rights in the South China Sea and its right to peaceful development, and should not recognize or implement any awards made by the arbitration tribunal in the South China Seas Case.
