Academic Lecture “A Trialogue on the Abolition of the Death Penalty” Held at CASS Law Institute

The academic lecture “A Trialogue on the Abolition of the Death Penalty”, which was the second lecture given under the Innovation Forum of CASS Law Institute, was held in the morning of March 25, 2014. The lecture was given by Professor Liu Renwen, Professor Zhang Shaoyan and Professor Fan Wen, the three members of the innovation project “Criminal Law Safeguards for Social Stability” and participated by over 50 Chinese and foreign legal experts and graduate students.

In the lecture, Professor Liu Renwen discussed the current situation of death penalty in the world, the reform on the death penalty system carried out by China in recent years, the correct understanding of the policy of “gradually reducing the application of the death penalty” by the Central Committee of the CPC, the crimes for which the death penalty should be abolished, and the revision of the death penalty-related stipulations in the General Provisions of the Criminal Law; Professor Zhang Shaoyan analyzed the abolition, reduction and limitation of the death penalty; Professor Fan Wen analyzed the idea of abolition of the death penalty put forward by Italian jurist Beccaria in his famous work "On Crime and Punishment" and pointed out possible misunderstandings of Beccaria’s ideas about the death penalty by contemporary legal scholars.
