By Hu Changming, an assistant Research Fellow at CASS Institute of Law, and a researcher at the CASS Center for National Index of the Rule of Law.

Abstract:Judges are an important force in resolving disputes and safeguarding justice. However, the overall financial situation of Chinese judges has been poor in general. As a result, judges’ sense of deprivation has been gradually increasing, theirsense of happiness and satisfaction has been continuously declining, andmore and more judges are resigning the job. Judges are able to uphold social fairness and justice only if they receive the remuneration package matching their terms of employment, occupational restrictions, and prior investments. Therefore, it is recommended that the remuneration of judges be improved through separate administration of sequence of posts, separately listed expenditures, improved pension systems, and other benefits.
