The Colloquium Commemorating the 30th Anniversary of the Adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, was held in Beijing on September 10, 2019, on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the Convention by the UN General Assembly. The colloquium was organized by UNICEF Beijing Office and attended by over 20 officials, experts and scholars from various government departments, universities, and research institutions in China, including Professor Liu Huawen, Deputy Director of CASS Institute of International Law and Executive Director of CASS Center for Human Rights Studies. At the colloquium the participants discussed various issues relating to the implementation of the Convention in China, including the imbalance of development between urban and rural areas, the protection of disadvantaged groups, the phenomenon of relative poverty after the elimination of absolute poverty, violence against children, and the quality of education, healthcare and other public services.
In his speech, Professor Liu Huawen pointed out that the implementation of the Convention is embodied in many aspects of social life in China, especially in the adoption and implementation of laws and policies. The new outlook on children advocated by the Convention has brought about the changes in the idea of children’s work in China. Since 2009, China has adopted and implemented three human rights action plans, all of which contain special chapters on the rights of the child. In the field of social sciences, Chinese scholars have made fruitful results in the research on the Convention.
