The Seminar on the Capacity of Law for Creating Gender Equality and the Launching of the Chinese Edition of CEDAW Commentary Successfully Held

   

 

The Seminar on the Capacity of Law for Creating Gender Equality and the Launching of the Chinese Edition of CEDAW Commentary, organized by the Center for Gender and Law Studies of CASS Law Institute, were successfully held at the conference room of CASS Law Institute in Beijing on October 11, 2020. The seminar and the book launching were presided over by Professor Xue Ninglan, director of the Center for Gender and Law Studies and attended by about 20 experts and scholars from All-China Women’s Federation, the Center for Gender and Law Studies, Social Sciences Academic Press, CASS Law Institute and CASS Institute of International Law.

At the book launching ceremony, Professor Dai Ruijun, the translator of the CEDAW Commentary, Ms. Liu Xiaojun, the Editor-in-chief of the Collected Papers Branch of Social Sciences Academic Press, and Ms. Rui Suping, the editor in charge of the Chinese edition of the CEDAW Commentary at Social Sciences Academic Press, each gave a speech on the main content and significance and the editing an publication of the Chinese edition of CEDAW Commentary, respectively. Ms. Song Wenyan, a member of the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women, Professor Liu Huawen, a member of the UN Committee against Torture, Dr. Qian Yewei, the head of the Rights and Interests Department of All-China Women’s Federation, and Professor Du Jie, director of the Women’s Research Institute of All-China Women’s Federation, each gave a keynote speech. In the speeches, they fully confirmed the important role play by this new book in promoting gender equality and the protection of women’s rights and interests in China and introduced the latest progresses made by the international community and China in eliminating gender discrimination and safeguarding women’s rights and interests. At the seminar, the participants discussed the provisions on the elimination of discrimination against women and realization of gender equality in the current Chinese laws and their implementation, and put forward suggestions on the improvement of the relevant institutions and mechanisms.
