The Seminar on the Development of Commercial Mediation in China after the Coming into Force of the Singapore Convention on Mediation (the Eight Social Science Roundtable) was successfully held in Beijing on September 12, 2020, the day on which the UN Convention on International Settlement Agreements Resulting from Mediation (the Singapore Convention on Mediation) formally came into force. The seminar was jointly sponsored by CASS Institute of International Law and BeiJing Association for Alternative Dispute Resolution with the support from China Academy of Arbitration Law, China Council for the Promotion of International Trade, and attended by representatives from courts, law firms, mediation bodies, universities and mass media.

At the opening ceremony, presided over by Professor Liu Jingdong, Head of the International Economic Law Department of CASS Institute of International Law and a special advisor to the Supreme People’s Court, opening remarks were given by Anna Joubin-Bret, Secretary-General of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law, Professor Chen Guoping, Secretary of the Joint Party Committee of CASS Law Institute and CASS Institute of International Law, Mr. Cui Jingmin, president of Beijing Association for Alternative Dispute Resolution, Mr. Chen Jian, Vice Secretary General of China Academy of Arbitration Law, and Ms. Cai Chenfeng, Vice President of China Council for the Promotion of International Trade. At the seminar, which was divided into two units, the participants gave presentations and carried out discussions on various issues around the topics of “the impact of the Singapore Convention on Mediation on the commercial arbitration in China” and “the linkage between Chinese commercial arbitration system and the Singapore Convention on Arbitration”. At the closing ceremony, presided over by Professor Mao Xiaofei, an associate research fellow at CASS Institute of International Law, concluding remarks were given by Mr. Cui Jingmin, Mr. Wan Xuezhong, President of www.legaldaily.com.cn, and Professor Liu Huawen, Deputy Director of CASS Institute of International Law.
