A six-member delegation of CASS Law Institute, headed by Professor Chen Guoping, Deputy Director of the Institute, visited Canada on December 8-14, 2019. Other members of the delegation included Professor Huang Fang, Professor Xie Zengyi, Assistant Professor Hu Changming, Assistant Professor Zhou Hui and Assistant Professor Lin Xiaoxiao.
On December 8, the delegation visited the Law School of the University of Montreal and held a meeting with Professor Guy Lefebvre, Vice President of the University, and Professor Vincent Gautrais, Director of the Public Law Center of the Law School. During the meeting, the hosts and guests reviewed the results of the exchange and cooperation between CASS Law Institute and University of Montreal, and expressed the wish to deepen the cooperation in the future.
On December 9, the delegation attended the seminar on “New Technologies and Law”, organized by the Center of China Studies of the University. At the seminar, the participants discussed the legislative situation, typical cases, and the future trend of development of such fields as digitization of labor law, digitization and protection of privacy, environmental protection against the background of digitization, court informatization, and the impact of digitization on the criminal law in China and Canada.
On the morning of December 10, Professor Chen Guoping, Professor Xie Zengyi and Assistant Professor Zhou Hui held a talk with Professor France Houle, Dean of the Law School of the University of Montreal on the future cooperation between CASS Law Institute and the Law School.
On the afternoon of December 10, Professor Chen Guoping and other members of the delegation held a meeting with Professor Vincent Gautrais, the Canadian director of the Center of China Studiesof the University of Montreal and the Director of the Public Law Center of the Law School of the University of Montreal. During the meeting, the host and guests further exchanged opinions on the future cooperation, especially details of the next year’s cooperation, between the Center and the Institute and reached broad consensuses.
On the morning of December 12, the delegation visited the Law Faculty of the University of Toronto, and held a meeting with Professor Andrew Green, the associate dean of the Faculty, and Professor Anthony Niblett, Canada Research Chair in Law, Economics, & Innovation. at the meeting, the hosts and guests discussed various issues around the topic of “the impact of science and technology on law”, including the labor law protection of Internet platform employees, protection of personal information, cyber crimes, impact of digitization on the legal protection of ecological environment , and AI and judicial trial.
On the afternoon of December 12, the delegation visited the Law School of York University and held a meeting with Professor Sharon Wang, Deputy Head Librarian of the Library of the Law School, some experts at the Intellectual Property Research Center, as well as some visiting scholars and students from China. At the meeting the participants discussed such issues as the current situation of the rule of law in cyberspace, the impact of technology on the application of criminal law, the legal application and regulation of AI, cyber crimes, and the interaction between environmental law and technology.
