The First Forum of 50 Lawyers Held in Beijing

The first Forum of 50 Lawyers was held in Beijing on January 10, 2020. At the forum, which was presided over by Professor Mo Jihong, Director of CASS Institute of International Law, Professor Chen Guoping, Secretary of Joint Party Committee of CASS Institute of Law and CASS Institute of International Law, and Professor Chen Su, director of CASS Law Institute, each gave an opening remark.

The purpose of the Forum is to create a non-governmental high-end think tank. The main tasks of the forum is to explore the development of the lawyer’s profession in China and abroad, share the experience in the administration of law firms, study the establishment of the system of law firm culture and the cultivation of integrity and the practicing quality of lawyers, carry out research and formulate strategies on the development of the lawyer’s profession, the tasks of political and legal work, and the system and mechanism for the assessment professional level of lawyers and the relevant indicators, and carry out foreign exchange activities in the field of lawyer’s profession. The forum is public interest and academic in nature. Its main activities include holding lectures on legal policies and organizing academic salons on the administration of the lawyer’s profession.

Professor Zhang Yuejiao, the former president of the WTO Appellate Body and director of Tsinghua University Institute for International Dispute Settlement, gave a keynote speech at the forum. Taking Xi Jinping’s new idea, new thought and new strategy of ruling the country by law in an all-round way in a new era as guidance, the participants carried out in-depth discussions on various issues around the following three topics: the role played by lawyers in the modernization of state governance system and capacity, opportunities and challenges faced by Chinese lawyers in practicing abroad, and strengthening international exchange and cooperation.
